The Favourite is the favourite! Film terbaru arahan sutradara Yorgos Lanthimos sukses menjadi film dengan raihan nominasi terbanyak di ajang The 91st Annual Academy Awards. The Favourite berhasil meraih sepuluh nominasi, termasuk nominasi di kategori Best Picture, Best Director untuk Lanthimos – yang menjadi nominasi Best Director perdana bagi sutradara kelahiran Yunani tersebut, Best Actress untuk Olivia Colman, Best Supporting Actress untuk Rachel Weisz dan Emma Stone, serta untuk Best Original Screenplay. Namun, The Favourite tidak melangkah sendirian. Film arahan Alfonso Cuarón, Roma, juga berhasil meraih jumlah perolehan nominasi yang sama dan bahkan akan turut bersaing dengan The Favourite dalam lima kategori utama yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya. Bergabung bersama The Favourite dan Roma dalam persaingan memperebutkan gelar Best Picture adalah Black Panther (Ryan Coogler, 2018), BlacKkKlansman (Spike Lee, 2018), Bohemian Rhapsody (Bryan Singer, 2018), Green Book (Peter Farrelly, 2018), A Star is Born (Bradley Cooper, 2018), dan Vice (Adam McKay, 2018).
Berbicara mengenai A Star is Born, film yang menjadi debut pengarahan Cooper tersebut mampu mendapatkan delapan nominasi. Selain di kategori Best Picture, A Star is Born juga meraih nominasi di kategori Best Actress in a Leading Role untuk Lady Gaga, Best Actor in a Leading Role untuk Bradley Cooper, Best Supporting Actor untuk Sam Elliott, Best Adapted Screenplay, dan sebuah nominasi untuk lagu Shallow yang ditulis Lady Gaga di kategori Best Original Song. Sayangnya, pengarahan Cooper gagal untuk dilirik pada kategori Best Director yang, selain Lanthimos dan Cuarón, barisannya diisi oleh Lee, McKay, dan Pawel Pawlikowski untuk film Cold War (2018).
