Pada tanggal 29 Januari Sundance Film Festval pun mengakhiri acaranya yang berlangsung mulai tanggal 19 Januari.

Di malam puncak acara yang dipenuhi oleh pesan politis tersebut, terpilihlah film arahan Macon Blair dan dibintangi oleh Melanie Lynskey dan Elijah Wood, I don't feel at home in this world anymore., untuk mendapatkan penghargaan utama, Grand Jury Prize kategori Dramatik, sebagaimana yang dilaporkan oleh The Hollywood Reporter.

Sebagai penerima piala teakhir di malam itu, Blair menggaungkan sentimen anti-Trump di pidato kemenangannya. Ia berkata, "good in the face of all of this craven, repressive, cruel bullshit that's going on. Registries and border closings and defunding Planned Parenthood and all this f--king nonsense."

Film yang berkisah tentang perempuan depresi yang menemukan tujuan baru dalam hidupnya dengan melakukan pencarian perampok yang telah merampok rumahnya memang bukan film yang mendapat sorotan lebih di Sundance 2017. Setidaknya tidak seperti favorit banyak kritikus, Call Me by Your Name atau fim dengan penjualan terbesar, The Big Sick.

Kebalikan dari tahun lalu, kali ini giliran sutradara perempuan yang memenangkan penghargaan kategori sutradara, yaitu Eliza Hittman untuk filmnya, Beach Rats. Pemenang tahun lalu adalah Dan Kwan dan Daniel Scheinert untuk film mereka, Swiss Army Man. "Nothing is more taboo in this country than a woman with ambition," kata Hittman saat menerima pialanya.

Malam penutupan Sundance Film Festival 2017 bertepatan pula dengan keluarnya perintah eksekutif Presiden Trump yang melarang masuknya pengungsi dan migran dari beberapa negara muslim ke tanah Amerika Serikat, sehingga tidak heran jika banyak pidato atau komentar berhubungan dengan hal ini.

Salah satunya yang dilontarkan oleh direktur eksekutif Sundance Institute, Keri Putnam.

"I want to take a moment to acknowledge the artists and documentary subjects who are from Muslim-majority countries who joined us at this year’s festival to share their work,” ungkap Putnam dengan berapi-api dan disusul dengan standing ovation yang dilakukan oleh para juri, seperti Peter Dinklage misalnya.

Lebih lanjut ia menyebutkan, "We know that closing our borders to these and other international artists stops the flow of ideas and inspiration that are so vital to the global community. We stand with you, and we stand with all people risking their lives for their values or seeking refuge from violence or persecution who are now denied entry to our county.”
