Awalnya film baru Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, dipercaya akan memimpin box office di antara barisan film baru yang dirilis akhir pekan lalu. Namun ternyata film horor komedi arahan Tyler Perry berjudul Boo! A Madea Halloween menyandung langkah film tersebut dan mengambik posisi juara.

Boo! A Madea Halloween sukses mengumpulkan pundi-pundi cukup impresif sebesar $23 juta. Sementara sekuel Jack Reacher menyusul di posisi kedua dengan $23 juta. 

"The star power of Madea and Tyler Perry is undeniable," ungkap analis media senior untuk comScore Paul Dergarabedian. "It's perfectly timed and perfectly themed and it just paid off. Tom Cruise is used to being No. 1, but in this case, 'Madea' was a very formidable competitor." 

Meski begitu, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back sukses menguasai box office secara global dengan mengumpulkan sebanyak $54 juta. Ini membuktikan kekuatan Cruise sebagai bintang box office internasional dan menurut analis box office senior Exhibitor Relations Jeff Bock, tidak banyak bintang yang memilki kekuatan seperti itu. "It's the overseas box office that really will put this into trilogy land," katanya. 

Film baru lain yang melakukan debut akhir pekan lalu adalah Ouija: Origin of Evil. Prekuel film horor sukses Ouija ini berada di posisi 3 dengan $14.1 juta. Menurut Dergarabedian Ouija 2 merupakan bagian dari trend "it's another horror movie" yang sukses di pasaran setelah The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, Don't Breathe dan The Purge: Election Year. 

Pendatang baru lain adalah film komedi Keeping Up with the Joneses yang dibintangi oleh Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot, Isla Fisher dan Zach Galifianakis. Film mendapatkan nilai B- di CinemaScore, namun sayangnya sepertinya akan sulit untuk mengembalikan modal produksinya, sebesar $40 juta, mengingat dibuka hanya dengan $5.6 juta saja dan menempatkan film di posisi 7. 

"It felt like the wrong film at the wrong time," kata Bock tentang filmnya. "The action-comedy caper is a tough genre to pull off. Unless you have the chemistry like 'Mr and Mrs Smith', it's almost impossible to make your money back."
