Berlangsung Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Beverly Hills, dan dipandu oleh Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee, John Krasinski dan Presiden Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, baru saja  Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) mengumumkan daftar nominasi untuk Academy Awards yang ke-88.

The Revenant memimpin dengan 12 nominasi, termasuk Best Picture, Director, Actor, dan Supporting Actor. Dan yang cukup mengejutkan, Mad Max: Fury Road menyusul di tempat kedua dengan 10 nominasi, termasuk untuk kategori Best Director dan Best Picture.

Menyusul kemudian The Martian dengan 7 nominasi. Sementara itu Bridge of Spies, Carol dan Spotlight dengan masing-masing 6 nominasi. 

Tentunya, sebagaimana yang terjadi setiap tahun, terjadi pro dan kontra atas piliihan Academy akan siapa saja yang terpilih dan siapa yang tidak. Sorotan paling tajam mungkin atas absennya Carol untuk kategori Best Picture dan Best Director. 

Yang juga menjadi catatan adalah dominasi aktor yang rata-rata datang dari kulit putih, sementara ada pilihan seperti Idris Elba dalam Beast of No Nation, atau Michael B. Jordan dalam Creed. Atau mengapa Rooney Mara jatuh ke kategori Best Supporting Actress dan layak atau tidaknya Rachel McAdams masuk nominasi.
