Film arahan Alejandro González Iñárritu, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) berhasil memenangkan kategori Best Picture di ajang The 87th Annual Academy Awards. Tidak hanya itu, film arahan Iñárritu tersebut juga berhasil memenangkan sutradara berkewarganegaraan Meksiko itu tiga Academy Awards sekaligus: sebagai produser, sutradara serta penulis dari film yang dibintangi Michael Keaton tersebut. Satu penghargaan lain yang diraih oleh Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) adalah Best Cinematography yang dimenangkan oleh Emmanuel Lubezki – yang tahun lalu juga memenangkan kategori tersebut untuk Gravity.

Selain Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), pemenang besar lain dalam ajang penghargaan yang dibawakan oleh Neil Patrick Harris tersebut adalah The Grand Budapest Hotel. Film arahan Anderson tersebut juga memenangkan empat kategori, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling serta Best Costume Design.
