Menjelang ajang Academy Awards ke 86 yang akan berlangsung besok pagi, Independent Spirit Awards ke-29 pun mengumumkan barisan pemenangnya. Festival film yang didedikasikan untuk para penggiat film yang mengerjakan filmnya secara independen ini didominasi oleh kesuksesan film tentang perbudakan yang diangkat dari kisah nyata, 12 Years a Slave.
Film yang disutradarai oleh Steve McQueen (Shame) ini tidak hanya menyabet gelar film terbaik, namun juga mengganjar McQueen piala Sutradara Terbaik.
Piala lain yang dibawa pulang oleh 12 Years a Slave adalah Aktris Pendukung Terbaik (Lupita Nyong'o), Sinematografi Terbaik (Sean Bobbitt), dan Skenario Terbaik (John Ridley).
