Film terbaru karya sutradara Moonlight, Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk, terpilih sebagai pemenang terbesar di ajang 34th Film Independent Spirit Awards yang berlangsung Sabtu, 23 Februari lalu dan dipandu oleh Aubrey Plaza.

Adaptasi dari novel karya James Baldwin tersebut telah memenangkan beberapa kategori utama, seperti Best Feature, Best Director, dan Best Supporting Female untuk Regina King. Sebagaimana diduga, King sudah dipastikan akan membawa pulang piala Oscar di kategori yang sama (dan memang benar adanya).

Sementara itu, Boots Riley meraih piala Best First Feature berkat film komedi karyanya, Sorry To Bother You dan Glenn Close membawa pulang piala Best Female Lead untuk perannya dalam The Wife. Sebagaimana Regina, maka Close diprediksi akhirnya akan menyabet Oscar pertamanya (yang tentunya ternyata masih belum bisa terealisasi).

Ethan Hawke juga menyabet piala untuk kategori akting, yaitu Best Male Lead, berkat perannya dalam First Reformed. Sedang Richard E. Grant, mendapatkan Best Supporting Male untuk Can You Ever Forgive Me?
